This is a series from Graduate Typography 1 that reinterprets African-American artist Lorna Simpson’s exploration of concealed figures and Michel Foucault’s theories on introspection.

Editorials and posters employ mirrored compositions, fragmented typographic hierarchies, and divided imageries to visualize tensions between cultural visibility and self-reflection. Serif typefaces anchor historical context, while dynamic asymmetry and restrained negative space echo Simpson’s interrogation of identity. The outcome frames design as a critical mediator between artistic practice and theoretical discourse.
